I couldn’t board with my carry on, personal item and a funny bag. I had to put my passport inside my pockets and put the funny bag inside the personal item. Then after passing the staff pull out everything again. Currently, there is only one airline operating non-stop flights from Charlotte CLT to Dublin DUB, which is American Airlines.

So, no movies, no games, no music… for 9 hours. The crew just told us that there’s nothing they can do but I noticed during the flight that there were empty seats, so they could have offered to us to change seats. Customer service could be better. I liked the piloting of the aircraft.

I was surprised and a little annoyed on my outbound flight from LGW to MCO as I had prepaid and booked my seat, which was all correct at check in on my boarding pass. When I got on the plane someone was in my seat ! The food choice is quite limited and I feel that an option of a muffin for breakfast snack would be welcomed, not everyone wants egg or bacon wrap. At reasonable prices, the hyper-limited menu still gets to a bit of everything — the flautas drenched in a salsa verde, the ribeye tacos, and a can’t-miss miso caramel churro.
Chef Lewis Donald’s Sweet Lew’s BBQ is a restaurant focused on honoring North Carolina’s long history with barbeque. The 450-square foot smokehouse remains the only authentic smoker in the Charlotte area, where meats smoke for hours over hickory, pecan, and peach woods for the best flavor in town. 15-hour beef brisket, pork ribs, and the chopped pork sandwich are the stars of the show but the sides, including boiled peanuts, collards, red slaw, and baked beans, are worth a few extra calories. Combo platters are a solid bet and come with a main, two sides, and the unforgettable sweet onion hush puppies. When focusing on food in North Carolina, many of us want to go for barbecue, doughnuts, fried chicken, and sometimes during the same meal (don’t judge!).
Whether it’s a casual outing or a special event, BATL offers a memorable experience. Dishes like sausage gravy, pot roast, and mac and cheese get a modern makeover. The restaurant is also known for its impressive cocktail program and a selection of local beers. The Karma cocktail and the 4G Negroni are just a couple of the standout drinks. The dining approach here is about sharing, reflecting a communal spirit.

Charlotte has a serious sushi experience now, with Omakase in Cotswold. But if $300 for a 16-course tasting (or $150 for 10 courses at lunch) is a bit rich, consider Omakase’s little sister in Ballantyne. It’s small and classic, with a full offering of rolls, nigiri, and sashimi, plus a great list of sakes. As seen on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, the traditional soul food and Gullah-inspired dishes fall in step with the bright, jazzy hand-painted decor.
We also love the Buffalo bleu cheese fries—they pack the perfect amount of Buffalo flavor when you want something greasy (fries!) but don’t feel like eating a whole plate of fried chicken. Artistic Framing, a custom framing shop owned and operated by Scott Waters, is a staple along this main drag through town. A Utah classic, Feldman’s Deli describes itself as “New York chic meets ski chalet comfort”—a vibe we can absolutely get behind.

This French influenced Vietnamese sandwich is Little Saigon’s standout dish. Start with a crisp French baguette, layer with cilantro, pickled vegis and mayo – then top with your choice of protein; everything from garlic butter steak to tofu lemongrass. This fast casual Mexican spot can be found in the very heart of Sugar House, just next to Spitz and SOMI.
The slow-cooked beef and pork bolognese is rich and savory, and the scoop of housemade ricotta dolloped on top of the pasta is the cherry on top. If you’re in Sugar House and in the mood for pho, but you think maybe you also want vermicelli, spring rolls, or a rice bowl, this is the place for you. In addition to classic and delicious pho—think clear broth, ribbon-like strips of meat, and crunchy bean sprouts—they also offer a hearty vermicelli bowl. Sugarhouse has for decades been one of Salt Lake City's best – and only – zones of concentrated, locally-owned shops.

Eat it with the serrano herb butter and the horseradish sauce (because there’s not much that’s better with succulent beef than horseradish!). It’s what you want your backyard BBQ burger to taste like—simple and no fuss, but fresh with a slight char taste. The tempera onion rings are light and crispy, served in an impressive stack. All the sides are made to order, and they are all a reminder that veggies should shine just as much as the meat.
We recommend the broccolini (wilted, lightly charred, and covered in a creamy sauce) or potato gratin (golden layers of potatoes lightly crisped with bacon and shrimp to add flavor). Per Noi Trattoria is a classic Italian restaurant with generous portions of creamy and cheesy pasta and other classic Italian fare right on the edge of Sugar House. We recommend starting with the fresh and beautiful prosciutto and melon, and the Aranchini—a large, fried round of rice and peas gently placed on a puddle of bolognese sauce.

If you’re ready to shop ‘til you drop, head toward the benches and check out these Utah originals. Their menu is on the smaller side, which we love, and their handmade pastas are the thing to get. The Rigatoni Bolognese is perfectly al dente, chewy, and hearty.

Most of the time things have sentimental value,” he explained, as he also shared memories of framing a giant buffalo hide in a hand carved frame. The new S-Line (formerly the Sugar House Streetcar) opened in 2013 to connect Sugar House’s business district with South Salt Lake and the Central Pointe TRAX station. The line brings thousands through the area today and makes it easier for people throughout Salt Lake City to enjoy everything that Sugar House has to offer.

Park your car on one of the tree-lined streets dotted with colorful Victorians and stout bungalows. Then put your walkin’ shoes to good use in this eminently strollable neighborhood.

Or head back to Fiddlers Elbow watch a game over a huge plate of nachos. Sugar House Prison, the first Utah state prison, was located in Sugar House during the 19th century and early 20th century. One of Sugar House’s best assets is its namesake park, which overlooks the Wasatch mountains’ soaring ridgelines. In addition to a great running trail, a large pond favored by ducks and geese, and rentable pavilions, the park is a perfect urban getaway for a picnic or a quiet reading session on the grass. By winter, the park’s biggest hill is popular for sledding, so come equipped accordingly. Handcuff said officials with the Department of Natural Resources have been notified so they can monitor any animals that may have been impacted by the spill.

Campfire Lounge, a dog-friendly hangout complete with fire pits, delivers the nostalgia of summer camping with friends while Club Karamba is the place to be to dance the night away to Latin music. It’s bordered by South Salt Lake to the west, and the neighborhood East Millcreek and the city of Millcreek to the south. The Wasatch mountains define the neighborhood’s eastern border.
As one of SLC’s oldest neighborhoods, Sugar House is home to many bungalows from the 1920s and 1930s. Homes in this community are known for their old-world charm and architectural details like arched doorways and handcrafted built-ins. Pride of ownership really shows along the mature, tree-lined streets with homes carefully maintained and gardens blooming. As part of SLC’s grid system, the boundaries of Sugar House are from 500 East to Foothill Drive and between 1300 South to the Salt Lake city limits around 3000 South. Still, many businesses and residential streets just outside of these boundaries use the Sugar House name.
Mumbai House is such a Utah classic, it hardly needs an introduction. We’ve never been led astray here—everything on the expansive menu is outstanding, which is why it’s one of the best restaurants in Sugar House. It’s buttery and rich, with complex flavors and tender chicken. The same goes for the chicken tikka masala, paneer masala, and malai kofta. We also recommend Chettinad Kolee if you want to branch out from the classic dishes and curries. This comforting dish is cooked with chicken, potatoes, and fennel.
SUGAR HOUSE FARMERS MARKET
When the old prison walls were demolished at Sugar House, nine sticks of dynamite barely dented them. By 1935, the prison had its own farm, and 75 percent of the meats and vegetables consumed by prisoners were raised on site. From 1904–1918, a new cell house composed of steel, brick, concrete, and stone was built. Each cell had running water and electrical lights, and inmates also received movie-watching privileges, could take part in sporting events, and were allowed to build their own swimming pool. Work projects for the inmates were started, and they began receiving some pay for their labors.

In 1957, the park was established and the city and county proceeded to deed the property, in trust, to the Sugar House Park Authority and continue to maintain a partnership to provide park maintenance. As you consider moving to Sugar House, Utah, you’re probably interested in the local real estate market. Whether you’re renting or buying, you’re sure to fall in love with the neighborhood’s mix of new luxury apartments and beautiful, historic homes. Since that time, dozens of garden clubs and other non-profit organizations have been holding their meetings at the Sugar House Garden Center, as well as putting on several flower shows each year. These flower shows are open to the public, and they typically fill all the floor space in both main rooms of the spacious building.

Ekamai Thai is one of our favorite Thai restaurants in Salt Lake City, and our favorite Thai restaurant in Sugar House. You can get all the classic curries here, but our favorite dish is the Khao Soi. It’s a little spicy, a little sweet, savory, a tad tangy, and incredibly flavorful.
In terms of the core of Sugar House, it’s a very walkable area. You probably want to head to the heart of Sugar House which is roughly 21st South and 13th East. From there you will be surrounded by bars and restaurants galore. This choice is maybe controversial, but Yanni’s is my favorite gyro in SLC. First of all, there’s the choice of red or white sauce – and you can even order both. The white is a traditional tzatziki, while the red is a rich meaty gravy (pictured above).
From the classic corned beef with mustard through the funky sloppy Joe or soul satisfying reuben – each creation is a masterpiece. Moreover, these enormous sandwiches are enough to share, or split over two meals. The Utah Territory built its first prison on the site in 1854, just southeast of the city limits. Brigham Young himself chose the prison site, which was six miles from the city center, in October of 1853. Whether you’re in the neighborhood or making a special trip, be sure to check out the latest addition—Minky Couture’s new shop.
If you stop by for drinks make sure to ask what seasonal specials are on draft, Wasatch/Squatters beers brew some of the finest beverages in the city. As Sugar House is one of the most popular neighborhoods in all of Utah, its no wonder that folks try to extend the boundaries to hopefully include themselves. We think the following boundaries make sense, as does Google Maps, where the image comes from. For reference, you might also hear about the ‘Sugar Hood’, that’s the area roughly outside of Sugar House proper itself. Relatively speaking, Sugar House is one of the most expensive areas in Utah.
Prior to this innovation, sugar had to be extracted from sugar cane. Other sweeteners were used in the form of molasses made from beets or sorghum. Established in 1853 by early Mormon settlers, Sugarhouse has gone through many colorful phases in its lifetime. Subsequent decades saw it as Salt Lake City's central furniture district, and then as a crime-ridden slum in the 1980s.
Towards the back of the space is a games room with pool tables etc. This is a one of a kind spot in Utah – and is located right in the very heart of Sugar House. Everything poured here comes from one of the brewers on our fabulous brew scene. Ran by Proper Brewing Co the bar showcases the best of Utah with 36 draft options, and more than 200 selections by can and bottle. Home to one of the best cocktail programs in Utah, and found just on the edges of Sugar House.
After hiring a sugar technology specialist, they built a $400,000 factory in Lehi, Utah. Known as Utah & Idaho Sugar, the new factory was capable of processing 1000 tons of beets into sugar per day. Sugar House pays homage to an actual sugar factory that was ordered to be built by Brigham Young in a first attempt to produce granular sugar from sugar beets. Perfect for shoppers and neighborhood business persons alike, Sugarhouse has a smattering of hip, casual, and affordable eateries. For soup and a sandwich, head to The Soup Kitchen, which has nearly 10 varieties of soup and over a dozen sandwiches to choose from every day.
